Background: The trial of 31 former Greek officers accused of torturing political prisoners resumed in Athens on Monday (11 August)
The officers -- now undergoing court-martial by the special investigation branch of the Athens military police -- are alleged to have tortured prisoners to extract information about plots to over throw the military dictatorship which came to power in the 1967 Greek coup.

Their trial coincides with that of 20 former members of the country's military ruling junta -- including former Primer Minister and President George papadopoulos and 'strongman" General Demetrious Ioannides -- now into its twelfth day.

Among the witnesses giving evidence at the "torture trial" on Monday were naval chief, Admiral Constantine Egolfopoulos, and Lady Amalia Fleming, the Greek-born widow of the British discoverer of Penicillin, Alexander Fleming.

Admiral Egolfopoulos broke down at one point during his evidence against one of the accused, retired Major Michael Kouloumvakis. He said that after being held for several days in complete isolation without either food or water, he had attempted to commit suicide.

Lady Fleming then told the court that she had been held in isolation for 32 days and told that her teeth and nails would be pulled out unless she confessed. Lady Fleming was arrested in August 1971 for her alleged part in a pot to free Alexander Panagoulis -- the would be assassin of Mr. Papadopoulos. She was sentenced to sixteen months imprisonment, but sentence was suspended and she was released in November 1971 to live in exile in London.

Later, during a break in the court proceedings, scuffling broke out between the accused and another prosecution witness, Mr. Ippokratis Savouras, a forme heavyweight boxer and now a member of Greek Parliament.
