Background: Floods in Northwest Uruguay have caused damage estimated at hundreds of thousands of dollars. Thousands of head of cattle have perished, and countless buildings damaged. At least two thousand people have been evacuated from their homes...mostly in the town of Rio Branco and in the area adjacent to the Maua River which forms the border with Brazil...and an estimated one thousand have lost all their possessions in the floodwater. The flooding has followed prolonged torrential rain last week, and on Tuesday (25 July) the waters were receding very slowly. Evacuees are crowding into schools and halls, while food and clothing is distributed, but health officials fear outbreaks of disease. It's thought likely to be several weeks before the affected areas start returning to normal.
