Background: British racing driver Roger Williamson was killed at Zandvoort on Sunday (July 29) when his March Ford crashed and burst into flames during the Dutch Grand Prix.

Williamson driving in only his second Grand Prix crashed into a guard rail and overturned on the outer circuit on the 10th lap. He was trapped under the burning car.

Williamson's friend and fellow March driver David Purley stopped his car at the scene of the crash and tried to put out the flames and free the trapped driver - but his efforts were in vain.

The race went on and was won by Scotsman Jackie Stewart. It gave him a commanding 10 point lead in the World Drivers' Championship and set an all time record of 26 Grand Prix wins for Stewart.

Francois Covert of France and James Hunt of Britain was third.

Later the New Zealand racing driver Denny Hulme, who is President of the Grand Prix Racing Drivers's Association, condemned the decision to allow the race to continue. he said there was so much smoke around it was impossible to see to drive.

Some drivers and eye witnesses of the death crash also criticised the fact that it was at least five minutes before fire services reached he crash scene.
