Background: Lagos, the capital of Nigeria, has been described as the dirtiest capital city in the world.

The words are those of Mr. Femi Okunnu, Nigeria's Federal Commissioner for Works and Housing.

In an interview with a Lagos newspaper, Mr. Okunnu said: "This city, capital of a nation of sixty million people, is sick and needs urgent purging". He went on to say: "Put bluntly, Lagos is the dirtiest capital city in the world".

The Commissioner blamed local authorities for the condition of the city and urged inhabitants to help keep it clean.
