Background: GHANA'S INTERNATIONAL REHABILITATION CENTRES FOR THE BLIND ARE PLAYING A VITAL ROLE IN HELPING THE DISABLED TO FOLLOW USEFUL AND REWARDING CAREERS. LAST SATURDAY (7 OCTOBER), THE ACCRA CENTRE STAGED AN EXHIBITION OF HANDICRAFTS BY 50 OF THEIR TRAINEES.

THE EXHIBITION ORGANISED BY THE GHANA SOCIETY FOR THE BLIND, DISPLAYED HANDIWORK RANGING THROUGH ALL ASPECTS OF ART AND CRAFT - FROM CLOTHING TO PAINTING TO BASKETWORK. IN HER OPENING SPEECH, LADY CHARLOTTE QUARSHIE-IDUN, THE GUEST-OF-HONOUR, DESCRIBED THE DISPLAY AS AN ELOQUENT TESTIMONY OF THE GOOD WORK THE SOCIETY FOR THE BLIND HAS DONE AND CONTINUES TO DO. SHE CALLED UPON THE PUBLIC TO SUPPORT THE BLIND, BOTH MORALLY AND FINANCIALLY, THUS ENABLING THEM TO LEAD NORMAL AND INDEPENDENT LIVES.

MRS. C.M. SIMANGO, DIRECTOR GENERAL OF THE GHANA SOCIETY FOR THE BLIND, WHO WELCOMED LADY QUARSHIE-IDUN, DESCRIBED HOW SINCE IT INCEPTION IN 1951, THE SOCIETY HAD TRAINED HUNDREDS OF BLIND MEN AND WOMEN, MANY OF WHOM WERE NOW GAINFULLY EMPLOYED AS EITHER CRAFTSMEN, OR AS TEACHERS OF CRAFTS IN SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.

THE EXHIBITION HAS ALREADY ATTRACTED A LARGE NUMBER OF PEOPLE - INCLUDING MEMBERS OF THE SOCIETY'S EXECUTIVE BOARD AND THE METHODIST WOMEN'S FELLOWSHIP. ON DISPLAY - AND-LATER ON BE SOLD AT THE BLIND CENTRE - WERE BASKETS, CHILDREN'S WEAR, FLOOR MATS, AND OTHER INGENIOUS ARTICLES OF CANE, A TRAINEE TOOK THE OPPORTUNITY TO THANK LADY QUARSHIE-IDUN WITH A PRESENT OF RAG RUG, EXPRESSING THE GRATEFULNESS OF GHANA'S 50 THOUSAND BLIND.
