Background: Israel's Prime Minister, Mrs. Meir, who is visiting London on her way back to Israel from North America, today (Wednesday, No.v.4th) called on the British Prime Minister, Mr. Heath, at his official residence, number 10 Downing Street.
Britain's Foreign Secretary, Sir Alec Douglas-Home, was also at the meeting.
The Middle East situation was expected to be the main topic of Mrs. Meir's discussions with the British leaders, especially in view of Sir Alec's speech last Saturday urging that Israel withdraw from some occupied territories. The speech drew swift replies from Israel, describing the speech as a setback for peace in the Middle East. British officials, however, insist that their policy is still governed by the United Nations Security Council resolution of November, 1967, which Britain originally sponsored.
Mrs. Meir, who is due to return to Israel on Friday, is to meet Mr. Heath again tomorrow (Thursday) for lunch. There has been strict security for her visit to London.
