    Background: ETHIOPIA: NEAR AWASH

ALMOST 400 PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND ABOUT THE SAME NUMBER INJURED, SOME CRITICALLY, WHEN A TRAIN PLUNGED INTO A RAVINE IN EASTERN ETHIOPIA ON 13.1.85. THR ACCIDENT, NEAR AWASH, 250 KILOMETRES (150 MILES) EAST OF ADDIS ABABA, IS THE FIRST IN AFRICAN RAILWAY HISTORY, AND ONE OF THE WORLD'S BIGGEST CRASHES. THE TRAIN, CARRYING ABOUT ONE THOUSAND PEOPLE, WAS ON A REGULAR TRIP FROM ADDIS ABABA TO THE RED SEA STATE OF DJIBOUTI WHEN THE DERAILMENT OCCURRED. ETHIOPIA'S DEPUTY CHAIRMAN (DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER), FIRKE-SELASSIE WOGDERESS WENT TO THE SCENE OF THE ACCIDENT AND INVESTIGATIONS ARE BEING MADE INTO THE CAUSE. ETHIOPIAN OFFICIALS SAY THE ACCIDENT WAS PROBABLY CAUSED BY THE TRAIN TAKING A BEND TOO FAST. NEARLY THREE HUNDRED PEOPLE HAVE ALREADY BEEN BURIED NEAR AWASH, WHILE THE BODIES OF OTHERS WILL BE COLLECTED BY RELATIVES. HELICOPTERS WERE USED TO FLY THE WORST INJURED TO REGIONAL HOSPITALS.
