Background: AT CAPE KENNEDY, THREE APOLLO ASTRONAUTS HAVE SUCCESSFULLY TESTED THEIR SPACE CAPSULE BEFORE THEY'RE PUT INTO ORBIT NEXT MONTH ABOARD THE APOLLO SEVEN SPACECRAFT. THE TEST WAS SIMILAR TO ONE CARRIED OUT 19 MONTHS AGO WHEN THE APOLLO ONE CREW DIED DURING A FIRE IN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM.

WEDNESDAY'S (SEPTEMBER 4) TEST WAS A MOCK LAUNCH OF THE SPACE-CRAFT. BUT IT NEVER REALLY LEFT THE GROUND. AT THE END OF THE TEST, CREW COMMANDER WALTER SHIRRA RADIOED: "ALL IS GOING WELL ABOARD THE APOLLO SEVEN SPACECRAFT."
THERE WAS A MINOR INCIDENT WHEN AN OVERHEATED TRANSFORMER NEARLY CAUGHT FIRE BRINGING BACK MEMORIES OF THE APOLLO ONE SIMULATED LAUNCH TO MANY SPACE OFFICIALS.

THEY CONDUCTED THE MOCK LAUNCH WITH THE SPACECRAFT HATCHES OPEN.
