Background: The President of Uganda, General Idi Amin, said on Thursday (21 June) that all refugees living in Uganda would soon have to go back to their own countries.

In a news conference at the Command Post in Kampala, the General said that the camps being used at the moment by refugees would have to be turned over to Ugandans, who were roaming about without homes.

He said his government was duty bound to care for all Ugandans first, and many of them were living miserably. These people, he said, would be taken into the camps and trained to establish themselves.

At the same news conference, General Amin announced the swearing-in of Colonel Moses Ali, who'd earlier been appointed Minister without portfolio.

SYNOPSIS: Uganda's President, General Idi Amin, held a news conference at the Command Post in Kampala on Thursday and announced that refugees living in Uganda would soon have to return to their own countries. The General said that after they'd gone, the refugee camps where they lived would be used by Ugandans, many of whom were without jobs or homes. He said his government was duty bound to care first for all Ugandans.

Speaking after the swearing-in ceremony of Colonel Ali as Minister without Portfolio, the General said that Uganda was caring for about 70-thousand refuges from other countries, but because his own people were in need of help, he had no alternative but to ask them to go back to their own countries.
