Background: In Thailand, Japanese investment over the last few years has recently been brought to the attention of the consumer public - and the result has been a nation-wide campaign to boycott Japanese goods in Thai shops.

Japanese motor cars, textiles, electrical, radio and consumer goods either imported from Japan or assembled in local factories dominate the Thai market. The economic influence has also spread to heavy financial investment and to banking services.

The National Students Centre -- the group behind the nationwide protest -- has accused Japanese investors and businessmen of being what they term "economic animals" with no thought for training Thai citizens for upper management level or promoting Thai economic interests.

The students are also claiming that in their economic exploitation of Thailand, the Japanese have evaded a payment of customs and income tax revenue totalling nearly 50 million dollars (U.S.) annually.

It is also worth noting, they say, that Japan's economic influence over Thailand will extend for a further twenty or thirty years following Japan's loan of more than 240 million dollars (U.S.) to the Thai government in order to finance the country's third five-year plan.
