Background: While Cyprus waited patiently and impatiently on the eve of Britain's announcement of her proposals for the future of the island, more British paratroops were flown in, and 150 officers and men of the 45th, Royal Marines Commando sailed from Malta to join them.
The Marines are being transported aboard the H. M. S. Bermuda.
Political speculators and observers wonder whether Britain is using Cyprus as a jumping off base should the situation in the Lebanon deteriorate further. Already the United States Atlantic Fleet is steaming towards the Mediterranean under the pretence of relieving the Sixth Fleet. According to US Navy headquarters in Virginia, this changeover should have taken place several months ago but was cancelled.
Towards the end of last week the airlift of 2,600 paratroops, from Britain, began. Three Comets, each carrying 44 men and doing two sorties, 15 Hasting aircraft with 42 men each, and five Beverleys, 80 men each or 30 men and 28,000lbs of freight, lifted over 1,000 men and 64,000lbs of equipment. They flew from Lyncham and Abingdon.
The Marines are taking four Royal Navy Whirlwind helicopters from the 728 (Commando) helicopter Flight, to assist in the internal security arrangements.
