Background: Today's rescue...firemen save dog from icy pond as the temperature drops to sub-freezing in New England. (FILM IN)
A pumper and hook-and-ladder of the Cambridge fire department in Massachusetts were called out this week-end to rescue a dog stranded in a little Fresh pond. And the fire-fighters had just the thing to do the job...a small aluminum boat bought by the city of Cambridge a couple of years ago when firemen had to save another dog in this same pond. The firemen had no trouble getting the dog into the boat. A little boy turned in the alarm about the plight of the canine. He told his mother, who called a former mayor, who called the fire department. Just by coincidence, the dog's name happens to be "Smokey." Perhaps a little prophetic...on the part of the owner, Mrs. Louis White, who is glad to get him back safely.
