Background: Rioting erupted in three New York prisons this week-end as inmates seized hostages and set fire to equipment to back their demands for better conditions.

Trouble started at the prison in Long Island City on Thursday (October 1). As Correction Commissioner George McGrath tried to negotiate the release of hostages, one of the leaders of the prisoners aired some of the grievances that provoked the rioting.

By Saturday, eleven hostages were being held in two of the three riot-hit prisons. Five of the hostages were threatened with death unless prison conditions were reviewed by a judge.
