Background: The U.N.General Assembly opened its 20th session tuesday (21 September) in a general atmosphere of harmony that ???aw the near-unanimous election of Foreign Minister Amintore Fanfani of Italy as President.
With the roll call vote on the Presidency, the Assembly ended a year-long paralysis over voting rights. The impasse has left it with a vast backlog of unfinished business.
The 57-year-old Fanfani was unopposed. But two votes were cast for former Yugoslav Foreign Minister Koa Popovic despite the fact that the had withdrawn from the race.Fanfani succeeds Alex Quaison-Sackey of Ghana.
The rest of the meeting was routine except for the admission of Singapore and the Maldive Islands to membership, bringing the U.N.rolls to 117 members.
