    Background: DORTMUND, WEST GERMANY

Students in Dortmund, West Germany, helped designed suspended monorail train which carries them between the various university Institutes and may prove to have far-reaching applications for urban transport. Single red carriages ride across the campus under a track high in the air. They can take up to 40 passengers at a time and travel at 60 kilometres per hour (about 35 mph). The "H-Bahn", as it us called in German, is remote-controlled. Closed circuit TV screens show the operator how many passengers are waiting at the stops and he holds car doors open as long as necessary. A computer feeds back information as the carriages speed along their route at the rate at the rate of one per minute. Urban transport experts hope the system can be used to cut down on traffic problems in Western cities by whisking people over blocks and obstacles.
