Background: A substantial oil strike in the North Sea was announced today (Monday) by the British petroleum oil company.

A spokesman said the well could produce 4,700 barrels a day and described the discovery as "Very exciting."
The oil was discovered during drilling at over 11,000 feet (3,350 metres) from the "Sea Quest" rig situated 110 miles (177 kms) North-East of the East Scotland port of Aberdeen.

The oil was reported to be sulphur-free and BP is expected to carry out more test drillings early next year.

The BP discovery comes after six years of drilling by international consortiums in the North Sea and a series of oil discoveries this year. It's the first major strike in the British sector this year. It's the first major strike in the British sector of the search area.
