Background: SEVEN SPANISH VETERANS OF THE FRENCH FOREIGN LEGION, WHO WERE CAPTURED DURING THE INDOCHINA WAR, HAVE RETURNED TO MADRID WITH THEIR WIVES AND FAMILIES. THEIR RELEASE BY NORTH VIETNAM FOLLOWS YEARS OF NEGOTIATIONS BY SPANISH DIPLOMATS, MAINLY CONDUCTED THROUGH THE AMBASSADOR IN CAMBODIA. THE SEVEN MEN, SIX VIETNAMESE WOMEN AND TWELVE CHILDREN, WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL DEL REY FOR OBSERVATION.

THE SEVEN MEN TOLD REPORTERS AT MADRID AIRPORT THAT HANOI WAS IN A CONSTANT STATE OF ALERT AND DESCRIBED IT AS AN "INFERNO". THEY SAID THAT THE PEOPLE THERE WERE DETERMINED TO KEEP FIGHTING UNTIL NONE OF THEM WAS LEFT STANDING.

ONE MAN, GARCIA FERNANDEZ, SAID HE LIVED IN THE JUNGLE NEAR THE CITY TO ESCAPE THE BOMBING. HE DESCRIBED THE BOMBING AS GENERALLY ACCURATE, HITTING RAILWAYS, BRIDGES AND MILITARY TARGETS, BUT SAID ONCE A LINE FELL WITHIN 50 FEET (15 METRES) OF HIS HOUSE. FERNANDEZ IS ORIGINALLY FROM GALICIA AND HAS SPENT 21 YEARS IN NORTH VIETNAM.

SR. AVELINO GIBEIRA TENREIRO, ALSO FROM GALICIA, WORKED ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF BRIDGES AFTER THE INDOCHINA WAR, WHICH ENDED IN 1954.

DOCTOR MANOLO FERNANDEZ SPENT 16 YEARS IN VIETNAM. HIS CHILD HAS AN INTESTINAL INFECTION.

MOST OF THE SPANIARDS HELD MINOR JOBS IN NORTH VIETNAM, SUCH AS LABOURERS ON BRIDGE BUILDING BUT WERE NOT SPECIFIC ABOUT THEIR ACTIVITIES. THEY SAID THAT FOOD WAS LIMITED TO 22 POUNDS (10 KILOS) OF RICE AND 7 POUNDS (3 KILOS) OF MEAT PER MONTH.....AND THESE WERE SPECIAL RATIONS FOR FOREIGNERS.
