Background: INTRODUCTION: President Josip Bros Tito of Yugoslavia is celebrating his fortieth year as leader of the Yugoslav Communist Party. The event coincides with another 40th anniversary - that of the founding of the communist party of the northern region of Slovenia. President Tito's being paying his tributes.

SYNOPSIS: The main streets of the region's capital city, Ljubljana, were gaily festooned with flags on Monday (25 April) for a visit by the President and other Yugoslav leaders.

A big welcome for the 84-year-old President, the world's oldest head of state. Large crowds carrying banners lined the city streets in what was believed to be one of the biggest public welcomes over for the former World War Two partian fighter.

Ljubljana's Union Hall was packed out for the Slovene Communist Party celebration. The party's anniversary was celebrated, in fact a week earlier, and Monday's gathering was festive session of the party's central committee. President Tito's audience included Mr Stane Dolane, the leading national party executive often mentioned as a possible successor to the legendary head of state.
