Background: One of the biggest cities in the British Commonwealth with nearly three million population is the tiny Crown Colony of Hongkong just across the China mainland.

Its growing population demands more and more food everyday and there is just no more land on the island for extra food production.

So the Government leased large territories from Communist China on a 99-year lease the moved the people there. Called New Territories, these agricultural areas have become an asset to Hongkong and a pride to farmers.

Every year the farmers hold an annual fair to exhibit their production.

This year the show was held at Un Long, pronounced Yuen Long, a major satellite town in the New Territories.

Thousands of citizens made their way on foot to the local high school grounds where the first attraction was a unique "Unicorn Dance" performed in this locality once every ten years to bring prosperity.

The cavorting of the man and the boy inside the "animal" provide an entertainment much loved by the Chinese, old and young.

The agricultural show covers a wide area with its exhibits of cattle, buffalo, goats, pigs, poultry, and other livestock, handicrafts and vegetables.

Picturesque countrywomen in their traditional costumes take a keen interest in water buffalos (22) which provide the main attraction.

No fair is complete without music - here provided by a Hongkong boy's training school band (25). One little boy watching is overcome with enthusiasm (26) .... And then the pipe band of the 1/6 Gurkhas garrisoning part of the New Territories takes over. The countrymen are well acquainted with their little defenders from Nepal ....
Later farmers proudly parade their prise winning buffalos and cattle round the show ring - the beasts adorned with ribbons before the applauding crowd.

Suddenly an unexpected visitor arrives in the person of the Rt. Hon. Dr. Charles Hill, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, here on a brief visit as British Minister responsible for co-ordination of Information Services. He drives up with Hongkong Govt. officials and is much interested in the exhibits ... especially the pressed ducks (see shots of Dr. Hill and duck).

Britain's famed "Radio Doctor" (BBC) takes a good look at these valuable exports - once barred from America because the eggs often come from Communist China, but now regarded as a product of the free world since the ducks peck their way out of the shells in Hongkong!
And here are the winners getting their trophies and prizes on the steps of the high school from the District Commissioner of the New Territories, Mr. Holmes.

While prizes are being presented, Radio Hongkong brings to life on the showground a weekly radio programme of variety called "Happy Farmers" ... Clowns previously heard over the air, mimed for the crowd and a sultry songstress enchants them with her voice.

A smart PT display by the little Gurkhas puts the finish to a perfect day .. Tomorrow its back to the rice fields for both the farmers and their buffalos for another year.
