Background: About a hundred Indian Moslems demonstrated outside the Iranian embassy in New Delhi on Monday (13 October). They demanded an immediate end to the four-week-old war being waged between Iran and Iraq.

SYNOPSIS: The Moslem demonstrators made their allegiances plain as they chanted their way along the streets of New Delhi towards the Iranian embassy. They shouted anti-Iranian slogans and called for an immediate cease-fire in the Gulf War. They also issued a plea for harmony and understanding between people of different religions and nationalities.

At the Iranian embassy, the demonstrators were confronted by police, many of whom were armed. But the strict security turned out to be unnecessary. The rally was without incident and there were no arrests.

Women demonstrators were barqa-clad, traditional moslem dress.

As the protesters grouped en masse outside the embassy, they issued a harshly-worded statement explaining their grievances. It expressed condemnation for what was described as the "racist Farsi aggression' on Iraq. It claimed the Khomeini government of Iran manifested jealousy and hatred towards all other nations, and above all, the Arab nations. The Iranians were accused of serving international Zionism and of hindering Iraqi effort to liberate Palestine.
