MILLER: "That's an interesting thing. That's an interesting thing. That's interesting. He's out. Of course, he's got to be out. He must be given out. What happened there, the ball went away and Hogg walked out of his crease. The fieldsman grabbed the ball, and, seeing him out of his crease, knocked the bails off. Quite legitimate, quite fair. Stupid for Hogg. He's very annoyed about it, as he would be, but, I would say, all within the rules of the book."



SHEEHAN: "He's being called back. He can be given out, run out. And there's going to be a conference, and really, he is out -- run out. He surely must be given out, run out. A no-ball given. He walked out of his crease while the ball is still in play. And I would say that, officially, the umpire, Mick Harvey, is correct in giving him out. He is given out; that is the correct decision, if he given out. The only way the decision can be changed now is if Mushtaq decides to withdraw the appeal."



MILLER: "Well, it's very ticklish situation, and Mushtaq might be a good-hearted Joe is he.....well, Rodney Hogg...you have lost a great amount...millions of viewers are watching this. Rodney Hogg, you are wrong, you are absolutely wrong, and it was the correct decision. I'm sorry to say so, but you left a little dirty face in a lot of people's minds."



Hogg had scored nine runs when the incident occurred. Veteran cricket watchers could not recall an incident like this one in previous Test history. Australia's Test captain, Graham yallop said Mushtaq was technically correct, but morally wrong in allowing Hogg to be finally given out. Experts on the rules said the umpires were wrong because Hogg had not been attempting a run when he was dismissed. Former Australian Test player Bill O'Reilly, writing in the Sydney Morning Herald, said umpire Harvey should have cancelled his first decision -- run out -- when captain Mushtaq recalled Hogg. In their first innings, Australia were dismissed for 168, another batting flop, in replay to Pakistan's first innings total of 196. The following day, Monday (12 March) Pakistan scored 5/279, with opening batsman Majid Khan scoring a superb 108.

Background: Cricket...and Australian fast bowler Rodney Hogg blackened his reputation with a petulant gesture after being given out off a no-ball in the First Test against Pakistan in Melbourne on Sunday (11 March). Before leaving the field, Hogg knocked three stumps from the ground with a savage swipe from his bat. Earlier, Hogg had been recalled by Pakistan's captain, Mushtaq Mohammad, but the two umpires conferred, then declared he was definitely out.
