Background: Rapid, Vienna, beat IFK Malmo, Sweden, 2-0 in their European Cup first leg quarter final, played in Vienna, Austria, March 22nd. Ten thousand spectators watched the game.
Conditions seemed at first to favour the Sweden as there was a thin layer of snow on the ground, but the sustained attack of the Austrians kept Malmo constantly on the defensive. Malmo - as they have done in the past - gave away corner after corner during their hard pressed defence. The total score in corner was 20....
The two goals came at the very end of the two halves. Dienst scored in the 44th minute. And then, one minute before the final whistle, Bertallan scored for the second time. But the score did not truly reflect the pattern of the game. Milanovic, Floegl, and Halla all failed to seize opportunities for putting the ball in Malmo's goal. Teams: Rapid: Nuyer, Steup, Glenchner, Hoeltl, Hanappi, Giesser, Halla, Milanovic, Dienst, Floegl, Bertallan.
IFK Malmo: Christenson, Hannson, Blomberg, U. Nilsson, Borg, Dahl, Jung, Olofsson, Karlsson, Nordquist.
