Background: The biggest crowd seen in Cyprus in recent years turned out on Monday for President Spyros Kyprianou and his son Achilleas, victim of last week's kidnap drama.
SYNOPSIS: A crowd estimated at between 30 and 40,000 jammed Nicosia's main square and its approach roads to express their solidarity with the President and his family.
Standing behind his mother..... Achilleas Kyprianou, whose kidnapping, according to President Kyprianou, could have plunged the country into a 'terrible civil war'.
The crowds roared their approval as the President appeared on the platform with his wife Mimi and their two sons. It was the biggest crowd seen in Cyprus since the return of Archbishop Makarios three years ago....and was held during a three-hour general strike, called before the release of Achilleas, to protest at his kidnapping.
President Kyprianou told the crowd he hoped a purge world soon be completed of elements in the civil service and security forces believed to be sympathetic to EOKA-B -- the group who kidnapped his son.
