Background: The Port of Abidjan on the Ivory Coast on Thursday (25 September) celebrated the Third World Day of the Sea with a display of marine technology and equipment. In a message to the world, the country's President Felix Houphouet-Boigny called for better maritime training to ensure that seas are not polluted and are safe for navigation.

SYNOPSIS: The ships in the port of Abidjan were specially decorated for the occasion and there was a display of boats from the Ivory Coast's maritime past.

People visiting the docks were given a tour of the port in small boats and shown around the new merchant naval training centre. In an address to mark the day, President Houphouet-Boigny called on the industrialised world to help developing countries by giving them the technology they need to harvest the sea to their best advantage. The main exhibition in the French Cultural Centre was opened by the Minister of Marine, Mr. Lamine Fadika. The Ivory Coast recently took part in a West African conference to decide a strategy for sea exploration. The Ivory Coast was one of the leading proponents for better educated maritime professionals.

President Houphouet-Boigny said that it was only through proper education that the world could be ensured of safe and pollution-free seas.
