Background: A massive avalanche on Wednesday (30 December) sent tons of snow outo a highway and closed a major mountain pass near Seattle, Washington.
A monumental traffic jam of holiday motorists formed a few miles down the mountain waiting for the snow to be removed. But just as the pass was about to be reopened, the falling snow turned to rain and threatened further snowslides. Police held up the traffic and about a thousand people were left in their cars and trucks in the valley below.
Most of them decided to wait, hoping the pass would be reopened sooner or later. Some slept or read books, and others just relaxed until police announced the snow was cleared and the danger of further avalanches had ended. Then they were off again to their New Year's Eve destinations.
