Background: Celebrations to mark Greek independence were held throughout the country yesterday (Saturday), but the focal point of the anniversary was the military parade in Athens which was attended by King Constantine and Queen Marie.

After attending a religious service in Athens Cathedral, King Constantine rode on horseback to take the salute at a military parade.

The celebrations marked the anniversary nearly 150 years ago of Greek liberation from the yoke of Ottoman domination. In the early part of the nineteenth century the Greek people carried on a long and biter struggle to free themselves from Turkish rule.

Invalids formed a special section of the parade, which also included infantry units, mechanised cavalry, light and heavy artillery and missile squadrons equipped with several types of ground-to-air missile.
