Background: The former Central African Empire prime Minister, Ange Patasse, has announced in France that he will form a Committee of National Union. He says this will be the first step towards a government in exile, opposing the rule of Emperor Bokassa. Mr Patasse was stripped of his premiership last July.
SYNOPSIS: Mr. Patasse said on Thursday (June 7) the time was now right for the Committee of National Union to be formed. He has told his supporters to prepare for the fight against Emperor Bokassa.
Speaking at the Paris news conference, the former Premier said his movement would vigorously oppose the rule of Emperor Bokassa, saying Bokassa had become bloodthirsty and was killing the "sons of Central Africa".
Mr. Patasse's statement is latest in a series denouncing the Emperor's rule, after allegations that up to one hundred children were killed when they protested against the compulsory wearing of school uniforms. One student who escaped the slaughter said Emperor Bokassa had taken part in the massacre by gouging out the eyes of children.
Mr. Patasse told the news conference that the committee would issue instructions on the overthrow of Bokassa when the time was right. All the youth, their associations, the trade unions and all groups in society must be mobilised against Bokassa, he said.
