Background: IN THE LONDON SALE ROOMS OF SOTHERBY'S TODAY (THURSDAY) A CAR THAT ONCE BELONGED TO SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL WAS SOLD FOR GBP1,350. THE CAR - A BLACK TEN HORSE-POWER AUSTIN CAMBRIDGE, BUILT IN 1938 - WAS BOUGHT BY SIR WINSTON NEW FOR GBP172 10 SHILLINGS. TODAY'S BUYER WAS THE MARQUIS OF BATH.

AT A SALE OF A NUMBER OF MOTORING ITEMS, INCLUDING VETERAN VINTAGE CARS, THERE WERE TWO CHURCHILL CARS, THE AUSTIN AND A 1955 HUMBER. THE CARS WERE SOLD WITH THEIR ORIGINAL LOG (REGISTRATION) BOOKS WHICH WERE SIGNED BY SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL.

THE 1938 AUSTIN, IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, WAS A FAVOURITE OF SIR WINSTON. HE SOLD THE CAR TEN YEARS AFTER HE BOUGHT IT, BUT THEN BOUGHT IT BACK AGAIN FOR TWICE WHAT HE HAD SOLD IT FOR.

NORMALLY A 1938 AUSTIN TEN WOULD SELL IN ENGLAND FOR LESS THAN GBP40, EVEN IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.
