Background: John Curry gave Great Britain her first Winter Olympics gold medal since the 19???4 Games when he won the men's figure skating event in Innsbruck on Wednesday (11 Feb). Second was Vladimir Kovalev of the Soviet Union and third place went to Toller Cranston of Can???.

SYNOPSIS: Curry came to Innsbruck fresh from his victory in the recent European championships. And he took to the rink with supreme confidence.

Curry went into the final in a leading position, but betrayed none of the pressure that such a situation puts on a skater.

Some of his movements were of a complexity to satisfy even the strictest technicians,
The most difficult leaps and spins were interspersed with flowing footwork that gained Curry an ecstatically enthusiastic audience.

In his final movement he progressed from a double jump to a kneeling position, and the flowers of congratulation began to rain down onto the ice.
