Background: South Vietnamese forces are strengthening their position in Laos amid reports that two North Vietnamese regiments are moving towards the strategic Laotian town of Tchepone now in the hands of the South Vietnamese. From their supply base at Khe Sanh troops have been moved onto Hill Sophia, two and a half miles from Tchepone from where they are bombarding North Vietnamese positions.
