Background: Verrazano-Narrows Bridge under construction. It shows scenes at the Brooklyn end of the Bridge, riveters throwing rivets, etc.
The Verrazano Narrows Bridge, linking Brooklyn and Staten Island (both boroughs of the City of New York, Staten Island officially the Borough of Richmond) will be the world's longest suspension bridge. It crosses the Narrows at the entrance to the New York Harbor. It is nearly three miles long, will cost about 350 million dollars, will have 12 lanes of traffic; its center span will be 4260 feet long, which makes it the world's longest suspension span (Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco has center span of 4200 feet). Each tower is 690 feet above mean high water; clearance at center is 228 feet above MHW. Each cable is 7205 feet long, as 26108 wires in it, and is 35 7/8 inches in diameter. This amounts to 142,500 miles of wire, some of which (Brooklyn anchorage) is visible in the film.
Completion scheduled for 1965.
