SYNOPSIS: Virginia Wade, seen here serving, played the first of the three rubbers against the American youngster, Andrea Jaeger.Despite her vast experience, the ex-Wimbledon champion and former British number one, found it hard to contain the American's firm hitting. After an energy-sapping rally it was Miss Wade who hit the ball into the net to concede the first set 6-3.
Miss Wade's serving did not prove powerful enough to upset the younger girl's rhythm. She had broken the American's service in the first game of the second set, but found it harder to hold her own.
Miss Jaeger won the next five games and served for the match. The American dominated the net and won the rubber 6-3, 6-1, with a deep volley.
In the second match, Sue Barker, serving from the far end, needed to win to keep Britain in contention. But it was Mrs.Lloyd who took the lead by 5-2.
The American served for the first set.The British girl tried to rescue the game with some powerful forehand hitting for which she is renowned, but her inaccuracy let her down. The American Wimbledon champion took the first set 6-2.
For Miss Barker the struggle became even more uphill in the second set.She served at 1-5 needing to hold to save the match. But Mrs.Lloyd was in outstanding form in a match which lasted less than one hour. The American won the game to take the match 6-2, 6-1 to ensure that the Federation Cup remains firmly in America's grip.
