Background: A record 243 yachts from 13 countries lined up for the classic 180-mile (290 kms) race from Cowes, in the Isle of Wight, to the French port of Dinard today (Friday, July 20th).

Exports are closely watching the race for pointers for the forthcoming Admiral's Cup contest. The three British boats that will be defending the Cup -- Prime Minister Edward Heath's Morning Cloud, Quailo III and Frigate -- are all in the Cowes - Dinard race.

Heading the overseas challenge -- and expected to give a good account of themselves -- are the Australian team of Apollo II, Ginko and Ragamuffin.

The full Brazilian and French teams are also contesting the cross-Channel race. And there are strong entries from Belgium, South Africa, Argentina, West Germany, Italy, Bermuda and Ireland.
