Background: The 31-year-old Prince Juan Carlos of Bourbon today accepted his mandate as future successor to General Franco and future King of Spain. Yesterday, General Franco proposed the young prince as his successor and won overwhelming approval from the Cortes (Parliament).
The 76 year old General showed signs of emotion as he announced that the young prince would take over from him whom be dies or is incapacitated.
He was given overwhelming approval by his ministers when the vote was taken on his proposal. It was carried 491 for, 19 against and nine abstentions.
