Background: The world's newest passenger liner, S.S.Oriana, arrived at Long Beach Harbour early on Feb 8th. The brand new 40,000-ton superliner - on her maiden voyage - is the largest peacetime liner ever to call at West Coast ports. The Host Port of Long Beach provided a variety of welcoming activities for Oriana's arrival - bands, fireboats and a Coast Guard escort.
The Oriana is the largest ship operating in the Pacific. Twin-stacked, the ship has a five passenger deck superstructure of all-aluminium construction.
The Oriana, which cost $40 million dollars to build, accommodates over 2100 passengers and nearly one thousand crew members.
