TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 4: BOEING SPOKESMAN: "I WON'T SAY THIS IS THE FIRST TIME WE HAVE BEEN IN THAT POSITION - THERE'S A PROPER TIME TO START A NEW PROGRAMME LIKE THIS, AND WE ARE WELL AWARE THAT WE ARE LATE RELATIVE TO THE CONCORDE AND THE RUSSIAN AIRPLANE; ON THE OTHER HAND, WE THINK WE HAVE DESIGNED AN AIRPLANE THAT SHAS SOMETHING MORE TO OFFER, PARTICULARLY IN TERMS OF SPEED AND SIZE. THE SPEED SHOULD BE ATTRACTIVE TO THE PASSENGERS. AND THE SIZE WILL BE ATTRACTIVE FROM AN ECONOMIC STANDPOINT."

INTERVIEWER: "HOW MUCH IN MONEY AND TIME WAS LOST BY THE FAILURE OF THE SWEPT-WING CONCEPT?"

SPOKESMAN: "WELL, WE HAVE TAKEN A LOOK AT THAT, AND WE FEEL THAT APPROXIMATELY THREE QUARTERS OF THE EFFORT WHICH HAS BEEN SPENT TO DATE CONTINUES TO BE APPLICABLE TO THIS AIRPLANE. IN OTHER WORDS, ABOUT A QUARTER OF THE EFFORT THAT WAS SPENT IN THE LAST YEAR AND A HALF, TWO YEARS, HAS BEEN, YOU MIGHT SAY, LOST TO THE VARIABLE SWEEP."

Background: THE GIANT AMERICAN AIRCRAFT CORPORATION, BOEING, HAVE JUST SUBMITTED THEIR NEW SUPERSONIC AIRCRAFT DESIGN TO THE U.S FEDERAL AVIATION AGENCY FOR EVALUATION.

BOEING WON THE CONTRACT FOR THE SUPERSONIC AIRLINER WITH A DESIGN FOR A SWING-WING AIRCRAFT, BUT BOEING ENGINEERS LATER FOUND THAT THIS AIRCRAFT WOULD BE TOO HEAVY. THE PRESENT DESIGN IN FOR A FIXED-WING AIRCRAFT.

IF THE U.S. AUTHORITIES ACCEPT THE DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT OF THE AIRCRAFT WILL STILL BE SEVERAL YEARS BEHIND THAT OF THE RUSSIAN SUPERSONIC AIRLINER, WHICH RECENTLY FLEW FOR THE FIRST TIME, AND THE ANGLO-FRENCH CONCORDE, WHICH IS DUE FOR ITS MAIDEN FLIGHT THIS MONTH.

PRESIDENT NIXON RECENTLY ASKED THE U.S. TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT TO SET UP A COMMITTEE TO INVESTIGATE ALL ASPECTS OF THE AMERICAN SUPERSONIC TRANSPORT PROGRAMME.
