Background: South African-led security forces shot dead 17 black Nationalist guerillas in northern Namibia (South West Africa) on March 3-4. This took to 172 the number killed since the search-and-destroy patrols began in the area, in mid-February. Troops of the Koevoet (Namibian Police force special task group) are spearheading the drive. Task force members are engaged in both foot and armoured vehicle against a guerilla force estimated at 700. Commander of the unit is Colonel Gert Naude, seen here checking a reference grid on a map of the area where the South West Africa People's Organisation (SWAPO) guerillas were believed to be operating. His target was a squad of SWAPO riflemen, thought to be making their way towards farms and villages surrounding the town of Tsumeb. The Namibian police special task force was also looking for signs of a group of 30 school-children, said to have been abducted by guerillas on March 3 and taken across the northern border into Angola, Swapo's base.
