    Background: KILAUEA, HAWAII, USA

Hawaii's Kilauea crater, which is part of the world's largest volcanic formation, erupted in the early hors of January 3, sending tonnes of red-shot lava more than 50 metres (164 feet) into the air. the volcano's sudden activity, taped from an aircraft, followed the appearance of five fissures along which long strips of lava. Billowing clouds of water vapour rolled down grassy slopes on the southereastern part of the island. However, officials say the eruption presents no threat to people or property. although Hawaii is itself part of a whole string of volcanic islands in this particular region of the Pacific Ocean, it only has two active craters, Mauna Lao, and Kilauea, which means "rising smoke". the eruption is Kilauea's second within three months.
