    IN ADDIS ABABA, HUNDRED OF PEOPLE WAITED IN LONG QUEUES FOR THE POLLING STATIONS TO OPEN.

    IN THE OUTLYING COUNTRY AREAS, PEOPLE WERE REPORTED TO BE MAKING THEIR WAY TO THE POLLS FROM AS FAR AS A DAY'S WALK AWAY. THE POLLING BOOTHS WILL REMAIN OPEN FOR TWO WEEK TO ENABLE ALL OF ETHIOPIA'S 5 1/4 MILLION VOTERS TO TAKE PART. RESULTS WILL BE KNOWN IN THE SECOND WEEK OF JULY.

    A PARLIAMENTARY SYSTEM WITH UNIVERSAL ADULT FRANCHISE WAS INTRODUCED UNDER THE REVISED CONSTITUTION PROMULGATED BY EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE IN 1955. THERE ARE NO POLITICAL PARTIES. A COMMON AIM EXPRESSED BY THE VARIOUS CANDIDATES IS FURTHER EXPANSION OF EDUCATION, AGRICULTURE AND COMMERCE.
