Background: The third of a series of trials of 16 alleged spies and agents of Israel - five of them Europeans - opened before the Supreme State Security Court in Cairo, United Arab Republic, June 16.

Consisting of three civilian and two military judges, the court began proceedings against two Greeks, Nicolas George and George Estamatiou, who are charged with spying for Israel. The prosecution was represented by state security chief El-Sayed Aly Nur-Eddin and his deputy, Abdul Salam Hamed.

Proceeding against "Israeli spies" first began May 17, when a Dutchman and two Italians appeared before the court to answer charges of collecting and communicating military information to Israel. The prosecution demanded the death sentence.

All defendants in the current Cairo trials were arrested in Alexandria last April, when the UAR authorities announced the discovery of "six Israel spy rings operating in the United Arab Republic, Italy. Switzerland, West Germany and the Netherlands."
