Background: The United Arab Republic's Foreign Minister, Dr. Mahmoud Riad, flew into London from Paris yesterday (Tuesday) and later had talks with Britain's Prime Minister, Mr. Edward Heath, and the Foreign Secretary, Sir Alec Douglas-Home. Before he left the country he gave a Press conference at the Egyptian Embassy today.
Dr. Riad said his country refused to accept the status quo in the Middle East involving Israeli occupation of territories formerly held by the arabs. "We refuse to let the Israelis occupy our territories permanently," he said.
Asked if the middle East ceasefire could be extended after its expiry date, February 5, Dr. Riad replied: "It could be extended not just for six months but for ever if only the Israelis were ready to implement Resolution 242" (This is the U.N. Security Council resolution of November 22, 1967).
Dr. Riad said the United Arab Republic saw this as a package deal with three main provisions - withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied territory, establishment of conditions for a just and lasting peace, and other guarantees. It was about time that Israel said yes or no to this resolution, he said.
