Background: Once again Greek-Cypriot Archbishop Makarios showed his sympathetic leanings towards Eoka, the Cypriot rebel organisation, when he ordered and attended a special Requiem Mass sung at the Prophet Elias Church of Pangrati (a suburb of Athens) in memory of Eoka's toughest member, Gregorios Afxentiou. Afxentiou blew himself up in his Cyprus hide-out rather than fall to the security forces. While Makarios inspires and supports functions such as this he still accuses Britain of lack of goodwill and claims that his presence in Cyprus would contribute to an easing of the tension. Other members of the Cyprus Ethnarchy, members of the Pan-Hellenic Committee for the Struggle of Self Determination in Cyprus, Cyprus Youth Organisations and Students also attended the Mass.
