Background: Flamengo of Brazil beat Universidad de los Andes of Venezuela by two goals to one in a Libertadores Cup match in Rio's Maracana Stadium on July 12. The competition is between club champions of South American countries and Flamengo needed a win to take them to equal top to their group and force a play-off with group leaders Gremio of Brazil, with the winners meeting Independiente of Argentina in the final. Flamengo dominated the early play, nearly scoring after the Universidad goalkeeper was caught hopelessly our of position. But it was Universidad who shocked the home fans when they took the lead after 12 minutes. The Venezuelans forced a corner, and it was number seven Itamar who headed the ball home. Flamengo always threatened to equalise, but the Universidad goalkeeper had other ideas. At half time it was Flamingo nil, Universidad one. A Flamengo attack in the 52nd minute brought the goal the home team needed so badly, as number ten Tita headed past the keeper. After that Flamengo moved into top gear. Tita netted again, but the goal was disallowed. It was not until the 85th minute that the Brazilians got their winner, again with header, this time from number 8 Adilio. Flamengo meet Gremio in the group 1 play-off in Sao Paulo on July 19.
