Background: More than a million Moslems converged on Mount Arafat, about six miles (10 km) from Mecca ... the holiest of the Islamic cities ... for the annual pilgrimage.
The pilgrims travelled to Saudi Arabia for the celebrations by plane, boat, bus, camel, on horseback and even on foot. Many had scrimped and saved ... some even sold their belongings ... to go to Mecca and achieve the title of Haji - one who has made the pilgrimage.
The morning march to Mount Arafat is the most important rite of the pilgrimage, seeking God's forgiveness. At the noon and afternoon prayers, Sheikh Abdulaziz Ibn Abdallah urged the pilgrims to stand fast to their religion. He also urged them to work for solidarity and fraternity.
