Background: At the Group B world ice hockey championships in Tokyo on March 30 Switzerland beat bottom place Yugoslavia 4-1. The Swiss, playing in red, took a 1-0 lead in the first period after Luedi swept the puck past the Yugoslav keeper. The Yugoslav coaches looked on anxiously as their team attacked and scored through a Suvak shot. Switzerland scored a further three goals in the second period. It remained for them to defeat Norway in their last game to stand an even chance of being one of the three teams to qualify for the Sarajevo Winter Olympics next year. This position was in sharp contrast to that of Austria, who overpowered Rumania 12-2. They were almost certain of a place in the Winter Olympics after some fine performances in the eight-nation tournament, from which the United States had already qualified. In the match, Sivec scored the only goal of the first period for Austria (playing in red). In the second period, Cijan scored twice to put his team 4-1 ahead. They won that period 6-1. Austria also took the final period 5-1, with goals from Holst (2), Sivec, Poek and Harand. Rumania was only able to reply with two goals, one of which was from Solyom. The other teams taking part in the championships were the hosts, Japan, Poland and Norway.
