Background: A helicopter whirred overhead as Austrian First Secretary for the Defence Ministry, Herr Rosch, opened the 7-day 4th International Military Ski Championship at Saalfelden, Austria, Feb 21, before competing teams from France, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Austria.

In heavy snowfall, the Mens Solo Competition commenced, and home first in the cross-country race was Lennart Bjorken of Sweden.

In the Patrol Race - or Biathlon - competitors accumulated points as they ski-ed across country and fired five shots at each of four different ranges along the course. Victors were the Norwegian team - thereby winning the championship. Second; Finland's number two team.

The triumphant Norwegian team were warmly congratulated on their success by Austrian Minister of Defence, Herr Graf.
