Skiers in the Finnish town of Lappeenranta tried out a new machine on Friday (7 March), which could revolutionise the costly sport of ski-jumping.

Its inventor, Mr. Spede Pasanen, calls it the 'Flat Ski-Jumping Machine', and claims it has a myriad of advantages over the conventional ski-jump.
The electrically-powered machine pulls the skier from a standing start...much like a water skier is pulled by a power boat. The skier gripe the end of a wire as he is quickly accelerated along the flat and reaches the slope at top speed.
This removes the need for an expensive and permanent steep platform which skiers have until now always used to gain speed for a jump.
Conventional ski-jumps can cost over 100,000 pounds sterling (246,000 U.S. dollars) to construct, the ski-jump machine--which is readily portable--only about 5,000 pounds sterling (12,300 U.S. dollars).
Among its other advantages, according to Mr. Pasanen, is a speed range of zero to 90 miles an hour (145 k.p.h.) over a short distance: it is also suitable for beginners and jumpers of all ages.
There is enough to recommend it, he believes, to make the 'Flat Ski-Jump Machine' a winner with ski-jumpers and winter sport association around the world.
