    REPORTER: "You said you've been in contact lately with Mr Waldheim about the Special Commission that it was suggested to be put up to investigate the events in Iran. What are the latest developments in the regards?"



    GHOTBZADEH: "Well, Mr. Waldheim called me last night at two o'clock in the morning in Rome time to inform me that he's in contact with the members of the Commissions that he's trying to form, and as soon as a number people are contacted and accepted, then he will announce the formation of the Commission. So we are expecting it within a couple of days to be announced.

    Background: Iranian Foreign Minister Mr. Sadeq Ghotbzadeh, has held talks with the Italian and French governments as part of Iran's efforts to normalise relations with Western Europe. On Friday (15 February) Mr. Ghotbzadeh held a one-hour meeting with Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Agostino Casaroli but he denied the Vatican was involved in mediation efforts over the American hostages in Teheran.

    SYNOPSIS: After his talks with Cardinal Casaroli, Mr. Ghotbzadeh opened a photograph exhibition featuring the Iranian revolution. At a news conference later he said the American hostages would not be released until a proposed United Nations sponsored commission published its finding.

    Mr. Ghotbzadeh later left for Paris and the following day (Saturday 16 February) held talks with French Foreign Minister Jean Francois-Poncet at the Quai D'Orsay.

    During their 90-minute meeting Mr. Ghotbzadeh discussed the question of the American hostages as well as the economic situation between the two countries. The revolutionary government has annulled French contracts singed by the Shah's regime. Speaking to reporters later, Mr. Ghotbzadeh said both Ayatollah Khomeini and the Revolutionary Council had approved the formation of a UN Special Commission on Iran. He added there was no clash between Iran. He added there was no clash between Iranian authorities and the students in the U.S. Embassy over the holding of the hostages.
