TRANSCRIPT: (SEQ 4): MACMILLAN: "SO THIS IS THE GENERAL BACKGROUND. WE'VE HAD PARTICULAR QUESTIONS OF COURSE WHICH ARISE; THE QUESTION WHICH IS IN MANY PEOPLE'S MINDS OF THE FUTURE OF THE BOMBER, OF SKYBOLT AND SO FORTH, AND SO FAR AS SKYBOLT IS CONCERNED I AM IN NO DOUBT THAT WE SHALL FIND A WAY THROUGH OUR DIFFICULTIES IN THE SPIRIT OF AGREEMENT WHICH WE HAVE ALWAYS HAD WITH THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AND ADMINISTRATION. AND WITH REGARD TO OTHER FIELDS, THE BROADER ISSUES OF EUROPE AND RUSSIA, WHATEVER MAY BE THE SITUATION IT PROVES TO BE A PERIOD OF THAW AND PERHAPS SOME LITTLE RELAXATION. WELL, WE MUST NOT MISUSE IT. WE MUST USE IT, IN MY VIEW, TO BUILD UP THE GREATER UNITY OF EUROPE.

Background: THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, MR MACMILLAN, LEFT LONDON AIRPORT BY A COMET JET OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE TODAY (MONDAY) TO FLY TO THE BAHAMAS WHERE HE IS TO HAVE TALKS WITH PRESIDENT KENNEDY. MR MACMILLAN WAS ACCOMPANIED BY THE BRITISH FOREIGN SECRETARY, LORD HOME.

AS THE BAHAMAS IS A BRITISH COLONY, MR MACMILLAN WILL ACT AS HOST FOR PRESIDENT KENNEDY AND HIS ADVISERS. THE TALKS ARE EXPECTED TO CENTRE ON TWO CRUCIAL MATTERS - THE FUTURE OF THE SKYBOLT MISSILE, AND THE COMMON MARKET. ON THE SKYBOLT ISSUE, THERE IS REPORTED TO BE A WIDE RIFT OF OPINION BETWEEN THE BRITISH AND AMERICAN GOVERNMENTS.

BEFORE LEAVING LONDON AIRPORT, MR MACMILLAN MADE A BRIEF STATEMENT IN WHICH HE OUTLINED THE PURPOSE OF HIS MEETING WITH PRESIDENT KENNEDY.

FOLLOWING HIS TALKS WITH PRESIDENT KENNEDY, MR MACMILLAN WILL HAVE DISCUSSIONS WITH THE CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER, MR JOHN DIEFENBAKER, AND WILL RETURN HOME TO BRITAIN IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS.
