C.U. Senator Dodd speaks,
"Twentieth century American's are demanding a solution, I haven't any doubt that the people of this country want legislation passed, I am well aware of the powerful organisation's which are spending a lot of to beat it, but I think they are going to have some fun doing it. Some people think that this was a hysterical consequence of the assassination of president Kennedy, this is completely untrue, the original bill had already been introduced by me in the Senate three or four months prior to the assassination".
C.U. Nicholas Katzenbach, Attorney General, speaks.
"Mr Chairman in a country in which more than half of 9,300 murders in 164 were committed with fire arms, many of them assuredly obtained by mail. Congressional action is called of now, in a country in which half the 20,000 suicides committed in 1963 with fire arms, many of which were obtained by mail-congressional action is called for now, in a country in which 26,000 aggravated assaults and the vast majority of 64,000 armed robberies were committed last year with fire arms, congressional action is called for now, In a country in which 216 law enforcement officers have been murdered with fire arms in the past five years compared with only 9 by other means-congressional action is called for now. As Long as I live I can never forget that it was a mail order rifle that was sent to a post office box, had been rented under an assumed name by a man with an established record of defection and mental instability that killed President Kennedy, and I might add Mr Chairman that it was a mail order pistol which that same man used to commit murder upon a police officer, It's for these compelling reasons of public safety and interest that the administration has proposed and most vigorously supports as 1592 to control the mail order sale of guns."
